First meeting after tariff increase
The meeting will consider measures to boost the growth of the telecom sector and resolve key issues along with the timeline, sources said on Monday. Akash Ambani, Gopal Vittal and Akshay Mundra will attend the meeting called by the telecom minister on Tuesday. This is the first meeting of the heads of telecom companies with the Minister after the recent hike in mobile phone tariffs. Private telecom operators have increased mobile service tariffs by 10 to 27 per cent since July 3.
Scindia will also meet Internet service providers, telecom infrastructure companies, academicians and stakeholders in the field of telecom research and development. The minister has constituted six advisory committees to prepare a strategic plan for the development of the region and take India to a global leadership position. Scindia met three of these committees on Monday.
Why was the meeting called?
He said meetings were held with three advisory groups constituted on satellites, telecom environment and electronics and original equipment manufacturers. This meeting was convened to discuss in depth issues related to SATCOM (satellite communication), manufacturing incentives and telecom equipment. Scindia said the purpose of the first meeting with the advisory groups was to decide the detailed agenda. He told reporters that issues related to each of the three verticals were discussed in depth to prepare the development plan.

The meeting was attended by Nokia India Regional Director Tarun Chhabra, Samsung President & MD (South West Asia) JB Park, Cisco Systems India MD Harish Krishnan, STL MD & CEO Ankit Agarwal, Tejas Non-Executive Chairman NG Subramaniam etc. The minister said that the next meetings with these advisory groups will be scheduled on different dates. The current status of the areas of work will be discussed. Also, where can India be placed in terms of development and leadership in these areas will be considered.
