Big Accident Averted At Mumbai Airport, Bag Full Of Chemicals Caught Fire, 5 People Arrested


Mumbai Airport incident: A bangle caught fire before the take-off of Ethiopian Airlines at the Mumbai International Airport created a commotion. A bag full of flammable chemicals caught fire before being loaded on a Mumbai-Addis Ababa flight. Police said on Saturday that they have arrested five people in the case.

The incident took place at the Mumbai airport on Friday morning. An officer of Sahar Police Station said that a total of five people, including a resident of Nadial in West Bengal, who allegedly carried the bag, have been arrested. Police have arrested Sameer Narayanchandra Biswas, Nandan Dinesh Yadav, Suresh Subba Singh, Vishwanath Balasubramaniam Senjudhar and Akhilesh Gajraj Yadav.

The bag was to be handed over to Naveen Sharma in Congo.

He said that Naveen Sharma is wanted in the case, who is suspected to be in ‘Congo’. The police officer said that the incident took place on Friday morning at around 10.30 am. As the luggage was being loaded onto the plane, smoke was seen coming from one of the bags. The bag soon caught fire, but was quickly extinguished.

Biswas was taken into custody and questioned at the police station. He told the police that a person named Nandan Yadav had given him the bag. He said that the bag was to be given to Naveen Sharma in Congo. After this, Yadav and three other employees, including employees of the logistics company, were also arrested.

A case registered under these sections

The official said the bag contained 10 kg of flammable substance, half of which was in liquid form and the rest in powder form. He said it has been sent to a forensic laboratory to ascertain its true nature.

He said Biswas and others were arrested under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (BNS) and the suppression of illegal acts against the Civil Aviation Security Act, 1982. He said that the purpose of carrying flammable material on the flight is also being investigated.

Ethiopian Airlines also issued a statement

Ethiopian Airlines has also issued a statement regarding the incident. It said, ‘On the morning of August 16, a fire was detected in a baggage container carrying check-in baggage for ET641 (Mumbai-Addis Ababa) at the ramp area at Mumbai airport. The incident took place when the container was being loaded onto the aircraft from the ‘makeup’ area.

It said, ‘Airport security and fire brigade took immediate action and brought the fire under control with all necessary safety procedures. The affected containers and baggage are being checked by Mumbai airport officials.
