The number of cross-border infiltrators in Assam is increasing. The Assam government said on Thursday that more than 47,900 foreigners have been apprehended in the state from 1971 to 2014, of which more than 43 percent are Hindus. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that since 1971 to 2014, the number of infiltrators from across the border has been increasing continuously in Assam. Of these, 27,309 were Muslims, 20,613 were Hindus and six belonged to other religions. The CM said that most foreigners are caught in Kachar.

According to the Assam Accord of March 25, 1971, the names of all foreigners coming to the state will be verified. Further, they will be removed from the electoral roll and steps will be taken to evict them from the state. CM Sharma said that the government is monitoring the situation.

When CM Sarma was asked that the number of non-Assamese speakers was increasing and it was a threat to the local people, Sarma said that the government was monitoring the situation.

The problem of Bangladeshi infiltration

The infiltration problem in Assam has increased rapidly since the recent uprising in Bangladesh and the resignation of Sheikh Hasina as Prime Minister. The number of people leaving Bangladesh for Indian states has increased. Also, Bangladeshi citizens are going to India due to the ill treatment of Hindus in Bangladesh. In such a situation, the number of foreign nationals may increase further. The government is taking strict action in this regard.
