From Sandeshkhali To Kolkata… Why Can’t These 3 Officers Stop Criticizing Mamata Banerjee On Crime?

When the government is in trouble, it is the job of the bureaucracy involved in the government to sort it out properly, so that the government is not embarrassed. That is why bureaucrats are also given crisis management training, but Bengal has three such officers, due to which the Mamata Banerjee government is discredited every time. Even in the recent Kolkata rape case, the Bengal government is facing trouble due to the negligence of these 3 officials.

From the High Court to the Governor, the government and its machinery are on target. Speaking to reporters on Thursday, Governor CV Anand Bose even said that the night is not safe for women in Bengal. Questions are being raised on these three officers as they are responsible for crime control in the state.

Who are these 3 officers of Bengal?

1. Rajeev Kumar- Indian Police Service officer Rajeev Kumar is currently the Director General of Police of Bengal. 1989-batch IPS Rajiv was made DGP of Bengal in December 2023, but in March, the Election Commission relegated him to a non-elective post in view of the Lok Sabha elections. After the election, Mamata again handed over the charge of DGP to him.

Mamata Banerjee’s close friend Rajeev Kumar’s name has surfaced in the Sharda chit fund scam. In the year 2019, when the CBI went to arrest Rajeev Kumar, the Kolkata Police itself surrounded the CBI. The matter became so serious that Mamata Banerjee had to sit on strike.

During the tenure of Rajeev Kumar, the case of Sandeshkhali also came in the media and he was accused of negligence in this matter. Now that the government is on the backfoot in the Kolkata rape case, questions are being raised about its working style.

2. Nandini Chakraborty- Indian Administrative Service officer Nandini Chakraborty is currently the Home Secretary of West Bengal. 1994 batch IAS Nandini Chakraborty has been powerful in the Mamata government. When Mamata Banerjee became Chief Minister in 2011, she entrusted Nandini with the information and culture ministry.

In January this year, Nandini was given charge of the Home Department. As soon as Nandini became the Home Secretary, the case of Sandeshkhali came to the fore, in which the government was discredited. In the end, Mamata had to come on the front foot in this matter.

ED officials were also beaten up in Sandeshkhali. In which questions have also been raised on the security system of Bengal Police. The Union Home Ministry had sent a notice to the Home Department of Bengal in this matter.

In 2023, when Nandini was Principal Secretary to the Governor, she too came into the limelight. He was removed from office by the Governor. Governor said that Nandini works for Mamata.

3. BP Gopalika- Bengal Chief Secretary BP Gopalika was also the State Home Secretary. Gopalika has also failed to solve the major problems facing the Mamata government. Major incidents like Sandeshkhali and Howrah violence took place during Gopalika’s tenure, which badly hit the government.

Originally from Andhra, Bhagwati Prasad Gopalika is considered close to Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. He is a 1989 batch IAS officer. Gopalika has experience of working as District Magistrate in several districts of Bengal.

What happened so far in the Kolkata rape case?

On the night of August 8-9, a trainee doctor was raped at the Radha Govind Kar Hospital in Kolkata, the capital of Bengal. This incident shook the whole of Bengal. Initially, the police kept talking about investigating the matter, but could not take any concrete action. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee herself had to inform the police.

As there was no major action in this matter, people came out on the road. Meanwhile, the matter reached the High Court. The High Court questioned the police investigation and referred the case to the CBI.

A new twist in the case came when people reached RG Medical College to demonstrate on the night of August 14. The protesters vandalized the college. The police had no idea who these people were and where they came from. After this incident, Mamata Banerjee expressed the fear of Bangladesh-like situation in Bengal.
