Senior Haryana BJP leader Anil Vij on Friday took a jibe at wrestler Vinesh Phogat joining the Congress. She said if she wanted to change from ‘country’s daughter’ to ‘Congress daughter’ what could they mind? Along with Vinesh Phogat, wrestler Bajrang Punia has also joined the Congress ahead of the Haryana assembly elections.
BJP leader Anil Vijay said this when asked by a journalist about Phogat and Bajrang Punia, who hail from Haryana. The former Home Minister of Haryana said, ‘If she wants to become a Congress daughter from the country’s daughter, what is our problem?’ He said that Congress has been trying to bring these players with it since day one. It was on his instigation that the wrestlers started an agitation in Delhi.
Resigned from Railways and joined Congress
Senior BJP leader Anil Vij said that the protests are taking place in Delhi due to the instigation of the Congress. Had this not happened, the matter would have been resolved long ago. Both Vinesh Phogat and Bajrang Punia are in their 30s. He met Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge and senior party leaders in Delhi. and officially joined the party at a press conference at the Congress headquarters.
Apart from this, Phogat resigned from the Indian Railways on Friday due to personal reasons. Poonia is a bronze medalist at the Tokyo Olympic Games. When Phogat became the first woman wrestler to reach the finals of the Olympics. However, he was disqualified for being almost 100 grams overweight in the 50 kg weight category. He later announced his retirement from the game.
Punia and Phogat made allegations against Brijbhushan Singh
Punia and Phogat were part of the 2023 protests over sexual harassment allegations against former BJP MP and then Wrestling Federation of India chief Brijbhushan Sharan Singh. Congress MP Dipendra Hooda gave Phogat a grand welcome at the Delhi airport on his return from the Paris Olympics last month.

Congress MP Dipendra Hooda strongly supported Phogat and other wrestlers’ agitation against Brijbhushan Singh over sexual harassment allegations. Haryana will go to polls for the 90-member assembly on October 5 and the election results will be declared on October 8 along with counting of votes.
