Landslide incidents have increased in Uttarakhand after rains. Regarding the landslides occurring in different districts of the state, experts said that there has been a widespread lack of rainfall in the state in recent years. Due to the change in weather, rainfall has decreased in many areas. This is the reason why the incidence of landslides has increased this year. Experts said that the cause of landslides is rain and change in weather. Many organizations need to study this together.
Dr. GB Pant National Institute of Himalayan Environment of Almora regarding landslides in different districts of Uttarakhand. Sunil Nautiyal said that many factors of climate change have changed the rainfall pattern. He also said that the declining bearing capacity of the fragile Himalayan region has led to more landslides this monsoon. He said that this year extensive rains have occurred only between September 13 and 15. While it has been raining only at the local level throughout the monsoon.
Why are landslides increasing?
Dr. Sunil Nautiyal said, the state has not received extensive rainfall in recent years. This is also an important reason for the increase in the incidence of landslides during monsoons in the state. Landslides are becoming more frequent due to less rainfall and being confined to one place.
Met department sources in Uttarakhand said that an average of 102 mm of rain fell in three days between September 13 and 15 this year, which was widespread. Nautiyal said that apart from this, there has also been a change in the rainfall pattern in the Himalayan region. Now suddenly the rains have started and the rains that used to fall in the months of June and July are happening in the middle of September.
He said that due to many factors we are studying the increasing fragility of the central Himalayan region and changing rainfall patterns. In this regard Nautiyal pointed out the need for other organizations to study this together and said that the efforts being made in this direction by only one organization is not enough.
The soil layer is becoming weak
Nautiyal said forest fires are also a factor that has led to higher-than-average landslides this monsoon. Forest fires burn herbs and grasses that weaken the soil layer. Due to which it fails to stop the flow of water. Due to which the possibility of landslides increases. He said that due to the deteriorating local ecology of the Himalayan region, it is raining even in the monsoon season.
Nautiyal said that we have many places like Jaradhar forest in Garhwal region and Shitalkhet forest in Kumaon where the local ecology is still intact because of the surrounding dense forests. The ecology of these forests contributes to early and heavy monsoon rains. He said that participation at the local level has played a major role in maintaining and improving the ecological health of Jaradhar and Shitalakhet forests.
