The USC-Michigan football game in Week 4 of the 2024 season has all sorts of storylines attached to it on the field. There is also a media storyline off the field. CBS, which has carried the SEC for nearly 30 years, is now a Big Ten broadcaster. The network so closely associated with the SEC for a very long time — and some important eras in college football history — is back in the business of carrying the Big Ten. Brent Musburger called some Michigan-Ohio State games with CBS before moving to ABC in 1990 to continue his storied college football broadcasting career. CBS was the broadcast network for some of the Big Ten’s most memorable and significant football moments in the early-to-mid 1980s, such as the Illinois win over Michigan which sent the Illini to the 1984 Rose Bowl and the Iowa win over Michigan in 1985, a battle of No. 1 and No. 2 in the country. Iowa went on to win the Big Ten championship that season and go to the Rose Bowl. That was a CBS game.
