Yesterday the country celebrated 78 years of its independence. Every corner of the country was painted in the colors of the tricolor. We all know that our country got independence on 15th August 1947 and hence India celebrates its independence day on this day, but like our country our stories are even more special… and one such story is from a town in Himachal Pradesh where Independence Day is celebrated on 15th No but 16th August i.e. celebrated today.

It is a tradition to celebrate independence on August 16 in Thiog, about 33 kilometers from Shimla, the capital of Himachal Pradesh. This tradition has been going on since 1947 and continues till date. To know the reason behind celebrating independence on 16th August one has to look closely at the history of independence of Theog.

Thiog was released on 16 August

Even when the country became independent, it was divided into several princely states. In 1946, a year before independence, he was fighting to free the country’s 360 princely states from kings and nizams. One of these kingdoms was Theog, for which the war of independence was also in full swing. The people here staged a major revolt against the king of that time. On 16 August 1947, people gathered outside King Karamchand’s palace in Basa Theog and the king had to abdicate under public pressure, after which Theog finally gained independence on 16 August. The country’s first democratic government was formed in Theog on 16 August.

Azadi’s ‘Jalsa’ will last for two days

Here Independence Day is known as ‘Jalsa’ festival. After independence, Surat Ram Prakash Praja Mandal became the Prime Minister and along with him eight leaders including Home Minister Buddhiram Verma, Education Minister Sitaram Verma took oath as ministers. This event will last for two days on August 15 and 16. During these two days the entire city is decorated like a bride and many kinds of sports competitions are also organized. Apart from this, people who sacrificed their lives in the freedom struggle are also remembered on the day of the procession. The entire population of Theog visits the historic Potato Ground on this day and various events take place there. Thiog has a local holiday on 16th August every year for Jalsa festival.
