India became free from British rule on 15 August 1947. The British ruled India for about 200 years. However, freedom was not as easy as the word sounds. Indian freedom fighters fought a war against British rule for years. Many people sacrificed themselves so that all countrymen could breathe a sigh of relief. Only then did India become independent.
