Indiana football defensive tackle CJ West ejected for targeting against UCLA

PASADENA, Calif. — Indiana football defensive tackle CJ West was ejected for targeting in the third quarter of the team’s game against UCLA.

The Hoosies built a 21-7 lead in the first half over a UCLA team making its Big Ten debut. The targeting call came on the Bruins first snap of the second half that was fumbled by quarterback Ethan Garbers, who mishandled the snap and was in the process of trying to recover the ball.

The officials said he was considered a “defenseless player” and West was clearly shown on replay leading with his helmet on the tackle attempt.

West is part of a rotation at tackle that includes James Carpenter, Marcus Burris Jr. and Tyrique Tucker. He was a high profile transfer in the spring window out of Kent State, but has only played 33 snaps through the first two games. He has three tackles with one for a loss and a forced fumble.

He will also have to sit out the first half of IU’s game next week against Charlotte.
