A 31-year-old post-graduate trainee doctor was raped and murdered at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on Friday. After this incident, the resident doctors started a movement not only in Kolkata but in many cities across India. After this incident, the principal of the college, Sandeep Ghosh, came under suspicion and there were demands for his resignation.
College principal Sandeep Ghosh resigned on Monday, silencing protesters demanding his resignation, but the story took a turn when the Mamata Banerjee government did not accept Principal Ghosh’s resignation and made him principal in another college.
Appointment of Principal of another college
Hours after Ghosh’s resignation, the Mamata Banerjee government made him the principal of Kolkata National Medical College and Hospital. Also, the Chief Minister has made Suhrita Pal, who was the OSD at Arogya Bhavan, the Principal of RGkar College. Also, Ajay Roy was the Principal of Kolkata Medical College, now he is given charge of OSD of Swasthya Bhavan. However, Ajay Roy’s tenure was to end this month.
Soft stance of CM Mamata
Even when Mamata Banerjee appeared before the public on Monday after speaking to the victim’s family, she was seen softening her attitude towards Principal Ghosh. He said that today (August 12) Acharya Sandeep Ghosh has resigned from his post. CM Banerjee said that Principal Ghosh told him that he too has his own family and since the incident happened, he has been facing many kinds of insults. After which CM Banerjee said that we have sent him to another place.
TMC leaders are not happy
On one hand, CM Banerjee’s soft attitude towards Principal Sandeep Ghosh is being seen, on the other hand, TMC party leaders are not happy with this decision of CM. TMC’s Entley MLA Swarn Kamal Saha, who is also the chairman of the same college where Sandeep Ghosh has now been made principal. He said, I have been in this hospital for a long time. He said that Sandeep Ghosh has been the MSVP (Medical Superintendent cum Vice-Principal) of this hospital for a long time.
Apart from this, Swarna Saha said about Sandeep Ghosh that, when he was in the position of principal, his relationship with the doctors was not good, because of this attitude, many doctors did not like him. He further said that even doctors could not meet him without an appointment, if they went to meet him without taking an appointment, the doctors were kept outside. Swarna Saha said, “But when Sandeep Ghosh was on the post of MSVP, he did a very good job.
The government’s decision has been welcomed
When Swarna Saha was asked if he was now happy with his appointment at Kolkata Medical College, he said, No, I am not happy, but I welcome the government’s decision. He also said that surveillance should be increased to protect the doctors and ensure that such incidents do not recur. Saha said, what happened in RGkar Medical College should never have happened here.
Politics on appointment of principal
The decision of the Mamata government has given rise to a new political debate, where the question has arisen as to why an Acharya who has been accused of corruption and is upset by students was reinstated to his post after few hours. He has resigned. BJP leader Jagannath Chattopadhyay attacked the Mamata government in this matter and said that Sandeep Ghosh has been a strong pillar of the TMC party. He also said that once Sandeep Ghosh tried to stop his transfer, corruption cases were also registered against Ghosh.
Amit Malviya raised questions
On the other hand, BJP spokesperson Amit Malviya tweeted that Suhrita Pal, who was working as OSD in Arogya Bhavan, has been made Principal in RGkar Medical College in place of Principal Sandeep Ghosh. He further said that the Mamata government’s intention behind it is to tamper with the investigation and erase all the evidence.
The BJP spokesperson further said that earlier Suhrita Pal was also removed from the post of VC of West Bengal University of Health Sciences due to corruption allegations. He further said that CM Banerjee wants to destroy all hope of justice for the victim.
Suvendu officer attacked TMC
BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari hit out at the relationship between principal Sandeep Ghosh and Mamata Sarkar, saying Sandeep Ghosh was removed from the post of principal twice by the health department but each time he managed to stop his transfer. He said that he had such a good relationship with the government that once his transfer was stopped within 48 hours and once he was transferred to Murshidabad Medical College, he returned to RGKar Medical College after 1 month.

Sandeep Ghosh first became the Principal of the Medical College in the year 2021, after which he was the MSVP (Medical Superintendent cum Vice-Principal, MSVP) in two colleges before becoming the Principal of RGkar Medical College. Sandeep Ghosh is an orthopedic surgeon.
