Kolkata Rape Case: Why Are Doctors Still On Strike In RG Car, Know What Their Demand Is


The agitating doctors of RG Kar Medical College are steadfast in their demands. They claim they want justice. As of Saturday, the agitators had given no indication of ending the strike. But the state health department claims that the impasse over the RG tax will end soon, with Director of Health and Education Kaushtav Naik saying after a meeting on Saturday that efforts are being made to normalize services at the earliest.

After the murder of a woman doctor in RG Kar, the entire state is in a state of uproar. Not only in Bengal, doctors from different parts of the country announced a strike. Although services are gradually returning to normal in other hospitals, protests against the RG tax still continue.

Junior doctors are continuing their agitation demanding punishment and action against the culprits in the RG tax case. Apart from this, there are several demands including their security, reshuffle in the administrative posts of the hospital. The agitating doctors have also warned that they will not return to work if their demands are not met.

Health services in RG Kar are being disrupted due to their strike. As a result Swasthya Bhawan is taking several steps to call off the strike and join the work.

On Saturday, Arogya Bhavan officials R.G. Had a meeting with the hospital officials. Agitators were also present in that meeting. After the meeting, the agitating students said, ‘We want justice. We want to know what is the motive behind the rape and murder of the woman doctor, what is the nature of the investigation. It is not yet clear which direction the movement will take, what will be their next step, whether they will call off the strike or not. The agitators said that any decision in this regard would be taken only after the General Body (GB) meeting.

Service Doctors Forum made this demand

On the other hand, on Saturday, under the leadership of Service Doctors Forum President Dr. Durga Prasad Chakraborty and General Secretary Dr. Sejal Biswas, a petition was given to the Director of Health and Director of Health Education. The organization says that the RG tax scandal is a collective result of the overall corruption of the entire health system. Its overall responsibility cannot be denied by health managers.

He said that there is a demand for proper and impartial investigation of pass-fail cases in exchange of money in cases like medical education and strict punishment to the culprits. Sandeep Ghosh and others whose names have come up have been demanded immediate suspension and appropriate punishment after investigation.

Dr. Durga Prasad Chakraborty said that longstanding malpractices in transfers, postings and promotions are also an integral part of this cycle of corruption. There is a demand for a strong hand to stop them through honest efforts.

He said that at present the number of staff in hospitals is determined according to the establishment list of 1991. The population has increased manifold but the number of doctors has not. He said that the way the investigation into the brutal murder of RG Kar is progressing, the real problem will not be revealed. This cycle is active in almost all hospitals and medical colleges across the state. The health department has to deal with these problems strictly and punish the culprits.
