A student from Uttar Pradesh, who was denied admission to an IIT simply because he could not deposit a fee of Rs 17,500 on time, has now expressed his decision on the matter. This student from Muzaffarnagar will get admission in IIT Dhanbad. The Supreme Court in its decision has ordered to provide all facilities including hostel to the student. The court also clarified that this will not affect the admission of students who have already taken admission in IIT Dhanbad, rather the students will be given admission on additional seats.

A bench headed by CJI DY Chandrachud said talented students like Atul Kumar, who belong to a marginalized group, should not be stopped for admission. The court said that after the deadline for depositing the fee, the student cannot be left in limbo but must be admitted. In this case, the Supreme Court had assured help to the student in the last hearing and the court had also sent a notice to IIT Madras as well as the Joint Seat Allocation Authority.

In fact, the student cited the poor financial condition of the family as the reason for not being able to deposit the fees on time. The lawyer appearing for Atul Kumar argued that he was given four days to deposit the fee after he was allotted a seat in IIT Dhanbad. Now it was very difficult for his poor family to manage the fee of Rs 17,500 in such a short time. The father of 18-year-old Atul Kumar, a resident of Totora village in UP’s Muzaffarnagar, is a daily wage labourer.
