Mahant Vineet Giri Maharaj of Mahanirvana Akhara said that the doors of the temple will be opened on Thursday, August 8, 2024 at 12 pm after the puja. Lord Shiva gave a boon to Naga king Takshak

On the third floor of the Mahakaleshwar temple is the temple of Lord Shri Nagachandreshwar. There is a myth about the temple being opened once a year. According to the legend, the Naga King Takshaka performed austere penance to please Lord Shiva. Pleased by the penance of Taksha, king of snakes, Lord Shiva granted him the boon of immortality. But despite receiving this boon, the snake king Takshak was not happy. He asked Lord Shiva that he should be allowed to stay in the forest of Mahakala as he always wanted to be in his company. Lord Shiva asked him to live in Mahakala forest and also blessed him not to disturb his solitude, so this temple is opened only once a year on the day of Nag Panchami.

Renovated twice

The ancient temple was renovated by King Bhoje in 1050 AD. In the year 1732, Maharaja Ranoji Scindia of the Scindia family renovated this temple. On the third floor of the ancient temple is a divine ethereal statue of Lord Nagachandreshwar. A Shivalinga is also installed on the inner floor. Once a year, on Nag Panchami, both these forms of Lord Nagchandreshwar are ritually worshipped.
