Penn State holds top 10 spot in Week 4 US LBM Coaches Poll after shutout win

Following a great weekend of college football and a dominant record-setting offensive performance at home against Kent State, Penn State saw no movement in the updated US LBM Coaches Poll for Week 4. This week, Penn State holds onto its top-10 spot, increasing its grip on the No. 8 ranking.

Penn State has not seen much movement in the poll since the season began, only ranking as high as No. 7 and as low as No. 9. The coaches definitely view Penn State as a top 10 squad but likely won’t move them any significant amount until the Nittany Lions take down some high-tier opponents.

The teams above Penn State saw relatively little movement, with the top 5 staying the same. Georgia remained the No. 1 team with 35 first-place votes, while Texas, in the second spot, received 18 such votes. The Ohio State Buckeyes, who took down Mashall at home, were the only other team to get a first-place place vote with two. Elsewhere in the top 10, Tennessee and Oregon flipped spots, with the Volunteers taking over the No. 6 spot after an impressive victory over Oklahoma. Miami moved into the top 10 after a big win over South Florida.

This past weekend featured significant Big Ten wins from Michigan and Illinois, which defeated USC and Nebraska. In USC’s first Big Ten game, the Wolverines beat the Trojans in the Big House. Michigan was the poll’s biggest riser, moving up five spots to No. 12, while USC fell four spots to No. 16. The Fighting Illini were the first team left out of the poll last week, and after their big win against the Cornhuskers, Illinois enter the field this week ranked No. 21.

BYU is the other newcomer in this week’s poll. The Cougars obliterated Kansas State Saturday evening to move into the No. 22 ranking. Nebraska and Memphis are the two teams to drop out of the ranking this week.

The Big Ten has six teams in the US LBM Coaches Poll: Ohio State, Oregon, Penn State, Michigan, USC, and Illinois.
