The ‘Reclaim the Night’ protest against the rape and murder of a trainee doctor in Kolkata turned violent on Thursday midnight. A large mob broke the police barricade outside the gates of the medical college and hospital and entered the premises and also vandalized police vehicles. The mob also barged into the emergency ward of the hospital and ransacked there too, causing damage to property inside the building.
The huge crowd of demonstrators could not be controlled by the police force deployed there as their numbers were less compared to the crowd, TMC MP Abhishek Banerjee said on the incident that the hooliganism and vandalism at the RG car has gone beyond all limits tonight.
Abhishek Banerjee said that as a public representative I have just spoken to the Kolkata Police Commissioner and requested him to identify everyone responsible for the violence so that they are held accountable and brought to justice within the next 24 hours, irrespective of their political affiliation. An official said that some police officers were injured in the violence. A senior Kolkata Police official said that we have sufficient number of personnel deployed outside the hospital and they have been instructed to deal with the situation.
The body of the female trainee doctor was found inside the seminar hall of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9. One accused has been arrested in this crime. The Kolkata High Court on Tuesday ordered the transfer of the investigation into the case from the Kolkata Police to the CBI.
