West Bengal Governor CV Anand Bose has sought a report from Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on her remarks on providing shelter to people from violence-hit Bangladesh. Raj Bhavan’s media cell posted on social media platform X that the Center has the prerogative to handle any issue related to foreign affairs.

The media cell said that the issue of granting asylum to foreigners falls under the jurisdiction of the central government. The Chief Minister’s public statement regarding granting asylum to foreigners is a very serious constitutional violation.

Mamata justifying intrusion: BJP

The BJP on Monday criticized West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s statement in which she said she was ready to provide shelter to people in distress in Bangladesh. The party alleges that Mamata Banerjee’s statement justifies intrusion into the state.

Part of West Bengal, India

BJP leader and former Union Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said that any attempt to undermine the unity and integrity of India will not be tolerated. He targeted Mamata Banerjee for her statement in which she said she wanted Bengal to have good relations with India. He asked what was the meaning of his statement. He said that West Bengal is a part of India.

Decision to grant asylum to Bangladeshis

At a rally in Kolkata, Mamata Banerjee said that in view of the rising violence in Bangladesh, she would keep the doors of her state open and provide shelter to the troubled people of the neighboring country. Ravi Shankar Prasad said that such issues are entirely within the jurisdiction of the Government of India. He also reminded that the Central Government had decided to grant asylum to Bangladeshis after the 1971 war.

Mamata Banerjee accused of justifying intrusion

She said Trinamool Congress leaders are strongly opposed to the amended Citizenship Act to grant citizenship to minorities due to religious persecution in neighboring countries but wants to help the infiltrators. Accusing Mamata Banerjee of justifying infiltration and trying to change the population of West Bengal, the BJP leader claimed that earlier the state had three Muslim-majority districts but now the number has increased to nine.
