Major initiatives are being taken towards women empowerment by the Punjab government led by Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann. So far free bus travel facility worth over Rs 1,548 crore has been provided to women in the state. Elaborating on this, Transport Minister Laljit Singh Bhullar said that during the last 28 months of Mana Sarkar, free travel is being ensured for women in Punjab Roadways/Punbus and PRTC buses.
He said that 32.46 crore travel facilities have been provided to women under this revolutionary scheme. A campaign is being launched across Punjab to empower women with safe and free travel.
The Cabinet Minister said that from March 2022 to March 2023, 14.29 crore trips were benefited to women at a total expenditure of Rs 664.63 crore, while 14.90 crore trips were provided to women during the financial year 2023-2024. 694.64 crore has been spent. He said that 3.27 crore trips worth Rs 188.98 crore have been provided to women during the current financial year till July 15, 2024.
The Cabinet Minister said that this important scheme is a proof of the multi-pronged approach of the Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann-led government towards social welfare and gender equality. Bhullar said that by removing financial barriers to mobility for women, this initiative enables them to have easy access to education, employment, health care and other essential facilities.
He said that our government believes that all-round development of all sections is the real development. This free travel scheme not only facilitates travel for women but also represents self-respect, freedom and development for every woman in Punjab.
