Punjab: Major Action Against Power Theft, PSPCL Fined Rs 4.64 Crore


As part of the Punjab government’s zero tolerance policy against electricity theft led by Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, a special checking drive was conducted in five zones of the Punjab State Power Corporation Limited (PSPCL) in Amritsar, Bathinda, Ludhiana, Jalandhar and on Saturday. Patiala. Giving this information in a press statement, Punjab Electricity Minister Harbhajan Singh ETO said that the checking drive was jointly conducted by the distribution and implementation wings of PSPCL.

A total of 28,487 power connections were checked in five zones during this checking. A total of 2,075 cases of power theft were detected from these checked connections and the concerned consumers were charged Rs. A fine of 4.64 crores was levied.

438 cases of electricity theft

Giving zone-wise details, the cabinet minister said that 438 cases of electricity theft have been reported in Amritsar zone and a fine of Rs 1.10 crore has been levied on consumers involved in electricity theft. In Bathinda zone, 527 cases were detected and a fine of Rs 1.41 crore was collected. 323 cases were found in Ludhiana zone and a fine of Rs 90 lakh was imposed.

340 cases were found in Jalandhar zone and a fine of Rs 50 lakh was imposed. Similarly, 447 cases were detected in Patiala zone and a fine of Rs 74 lakh was levied on the concerned consumers.

Legal action against customers

The power minister further said that apart from levying penalty, an FIR has been registered and legal action has been initiated against the concerned consumers. He said that the ongoing campaign against electricity theft would reduce the cases of electricity theft to the maximum level. He said that this campaign is the need of the hour to stop electricity theft. He appealed to electricity consumers not to make such mistakes.

Appeal to electricity department to help

The power minister said that the mass checking campaign will continue in the future as well. He appealed to all power consumers to help the electricity department in curbing power theft by informing them about such activities in their areas. He appealed to everyone to regularize their electricity connections so that they can be brought under the system. He praised PowerCom officials for successfully conducting the campaign against electricity theft.

Adopt the habit of saving electricity

Meanwhile, stressing the importance of energy saving for the economic development and stability of the state, the energy minister stressed on saving every unit and appealed to people to adopt the habit of saving electricity in daily life. He said that saving electricity is important to ensure stable energy supply, reduce our dependence on biofuels and reduce the impact of climate change.
