In West Bengal, the Raj Bhavan has fined two newly elected Trinamool Congress MLAs for taking oath in the assembly hall. The MLAs said on Monday that they had received an email from the Raj Bhavan, questioning the legality of the oath-taking ceremony and asking them to pay a fine of Rs 500.
Assembly Speaker Biman Banerjee administered oath to two MLAs in the Assembly Hall on July 5. The two MLAs were Rait Hussain Sarkar and Sayantika Banerjee, while the Governor appointed Deputy Speaker Ashish Banerjee for the same. After this the matter escalated and the government and the Raj Bhavan came face to face.
Information received by email
According to a PTI report, the MLA government said that the two MLAs have been told in an e-mail that they have been fined Rs 500 each. Both the people are accused of violating the constitutional rules by taking oath and attending on the first day of the legislative session.
Both the MLAs met the Assembly Speaker
Speaking to PTI, MLA Santika Banerjee said that we met the Assembly Speaker and showed him the email. He said that the Speaker’s office is looking into the issue. We understand that we have no objection to participate in the session as elected representatives after taking oath in the Legislative Assembly, the so-called temple of democracy.
Sayantika Banerjee said she will continue to participate in the assembly session. When asked if she had paid the fine, Banerjee said, Why should I? Have we done anything illegal or improper? At the same time, Raj Bhavan sources have confirmed that such emails were sent to the concerned MLAs. The Assembly Speaker could not be reached for comment on the matter.
