After entering its season opener ranked No. 20 in the nation, the Texas A&M football team dropped out of the rankings completely following a loss against Notre Dame.

The Fighting Irish (1-0) entered the contest as the No. 7 team in the country and with the Top 25 victory, Notre Dame moved up to No. 5 on Tuesday. While the 23-13 defeat may be discouraging, the Aggies (0-1) played well enough to earn a passing grade in this week’s report card.

Texas A&M was tied at halftime 6-6 in a defensive battle with a Top 10 team, which is encouraging. The Aggies even had a chance to still win in the fourth quarter, which is why they earned a C- for the performance.

Junior quarterback Conner Weigman got thrown right into the fire after returning from injury. On top of that, he was operating with an entirely new playbook under the guidance of offensive coordinator Collin Klein. While Weigman’s play may have been poor, it was against a great team, which is why he deserves some grace.

However, if Weigman struggles Saturday against McNeese State and doesn’t look like the five-star prospect he once was, then it might officially be time for Klein and head coach Mike Elko to consider other options under center.
