The Lieutenant Governor of Delhi can nominate 10 aldermen in the national capital. The politics of the Delhi Municipal Corporation may change very quickly after the Supreme Court’s decision. The whole affair started when the Lieutenant Governor of Delhi appointed 10 aldermen, including Manoj Jain.

The Kejriwal government called the appointment illegal and approached the Supreme Court. In an exclusive conversation with TV9 Bharatvarsh, Manoj Jain said that this decision will change the image of MCD to a great extent.

How will the picture change?

As for the 250-seat Delhi Municipal Corporation, it currently has 12 ward committees. Eight of these are ward committees controlled by Aam Aadmi Party councillors. While the rest of the ward committees are occupied by BJP councillors. It is being claimed that BJP will come to power in three wards with voting rights of aldermen in eight ward committees. Which includes Narela, Civil Lines and Central Zone.

Congress became king maker

Bharatiya Janata Party definitely has an edge if we talk about central zone in ward committee selection. But at the same time Congress is in the role of king maker here. In recent days, there has been a period of tension between the Congress and the Aam Aadmi Party after the Lok Sabha elections. After which the Aam Aadmi Party may face difficulty in the ward committee elections.

Because elders cannot vote in mayoral elections but can vote in zonal committees. Members are selected from the zonal committees to elect the most powerful standing committee in the Delhi Municipal Corporation.

Where did the alderman come from?

Alderman comes from the Old English word alderman. Which means old man. As per the Delhi Municipal Corporation Act 1957, the Lieutenant Governor of Delhi can nominate 10 persons above 25 years of age to the MCD.
