The Government Earned Rs 20,000 Crore In 4 Months By Selling Coal; So Much Production Was Produced


Coal has deposited a total of Rs 20,071.96 crore in the Modi government’s account in the last 4 months (April-July). The government-owned Coal India Limited’s (CIL) contribution to the exchequer has increased by 2.06 per cent during this period. Coal India Limited had contributed Rs 19,666.04 crore to the exchequer in the same period a year ago. Coal India produces 80 per cent of the coal produced in the country.

This information has emerged in the provisional data of the Ministry of Coal. Coal India sells coal to all the power plants in the country and deposits a part of its profits in the government account.

Coal India’s payout increased both in July

The total amount paid by Coal India to the government in July rose to Rs 4,992.48 crore. In the same period last year, it was Rs 4,789.42 crore. Coal India pays royalties, GST, coal duty and other charges to the central and state governments. Both the central and state governments earn substantial revenues from coal production.

In the first four months of the financial year 2024-25, Coal India made the maximum payment of Rs 4,417.12 crore to the Jharkhand government. Following this, Rs 4,319.67 crore was paid to the Odisha government, Rs 3,950.41 crore to Chhattisgarh, Rs 3,526.27 crore to Madhya Pradesh and Rs 2,086.35 crore to Maharashtra.

Coal production in the country increased

Moreover, the Coal Ministry has also released the data on coal production in the country. According to this, between April and August 25, coal production in the country increased by 7.12 per cent to 37 crore tons (6.7 lakh tonnes). In the same period a year ago, coal production was 34 crore tons (60.2 lakh tonnes).

In the current financial year, the total coal extraction up to August 25, 2024, was Rs 39 crore (70.6 lakh tonnes), showing a year-on-year increase of 5.48 per cent. The amount of coal sent to the power sector has increased to Rs 32 crore (59.7 lakh tonnes) from Rs 31 crore (34.4 lakh tonnes) in the same period of the previous year. At the same time, Coal India has also set a target of producing 838 million tonnes of coal in the current financial year.
