Today is Sept. 29, 2024. And on this date in Texas history, Williams Harris set a record for the football program’s tight ends.
As Texas closed out the second week of the 1984 season with a 28-3 win over Penn State at Giants Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J., Harris scored on a 84-yard touchdown pass from Todd Dodge. In addition to being tied for ninth-longest passing play in school history, that remains the longest catch for a Texas tight end. In the history of the Texas football program, there have been just five catches by a tight end that have covered at least 60 yards.
Following the win at Penn State, Texas took over the No. 1 ranking in the Associated Press poll.
Texas finished the 1984 season with a 7-4-1 record and an appearance in the Freedom Bowl. Harris was the Longhorns‘ leader in both receptions (34) and receiving yards (637) in 1984.
