Travis Hunter on being a 2-way player & his Heisman hopes for Colorado

The Colorado wide receiver & defensive back spoke to Yahoo Sports’ Caroline Fenton about how he prepares to play on both sides of the ball every week and whether it’s an attribute he thinks he can continue at the next level. Travis joined Yahoo Sports on behalf of GEN / EA SPORTS, a new program featuring the next generation of athletes and what they do and are most passionate about, on and off the field.

I’m Caroline Fenton with Yahoo Sports, joined by Colorado wide receiver and cornerback Travis Hunter.

I wanna talk about you because you’re doing something that’s unprecedented in college football.

How do you prepare watching film, getting prepared to play both sides and also p preparing yourself to play as many snaps as you play.

Uh, just watching film pretty much is easy for me.

Just come home watch film.

We go to school, we gotta watch them anyways and coach check our hours anyway.

So I try to get in at least 10 hours so I could watch five hours on offense, 55 hours on defense throughout the week.

On top of what we watch at a watch at school.

So that’s the easy part.

And then for me to keep my body up, I just do a lot of treatment throughout the, throughout the week.

My Thurs Thursdays are my treatment days or I just gonna get a full body done.

So do you feel like the plays that you make kind of invigorate the rest of the team?

Me making big plays on the offensive side of all have the, uh, helps the spirit of the team I mean, as the offense go to defense, go as the defense go to offense go.

So either way I’ll make a, he started the ball helps the team out a lot.

I mean, get the guys going, getting out up ready to go for the next play.

Let’s pretend that Heisman trophy voting happened today.

What would be the case that you would make for Travis Hunter to be in New York City?

I don’t have a case, man.

I just want to win with my team.

Go out there and just work together.

If I run the Heisman, then I’ll win it because of the guys that I have around me.

They help me a lot.

They like even the scout team guys help me get prepared to go win the he just, everybody in our program helped me and prepare me to go win it.

So I’ll just share a moment with those guys and let them know it’s a, it’s a team trophy still, even though it’s an even in individual, uh, trophy.

What would you say to someone that said you can’t play both corner and receiver at the next level?

I mean, there’s a lot of people that have been telling me that since I’ve been playing it.

So I’m just continue to prove them wrong.

Keep proving the haters wrong.

I mean, there’s a lot of haters, even the top dogs, top dogs are hating on me, but I let it go through one or the other, just let them keep them.

Does that fuel you?

Yeah.

If it me to prove them wrong, I want to prove them wrong more than I want to prove myself.

Right?

So, speaking of E A sports, they just revealed their new project that you’re a part of.

It’s gen E A sports.

Let’s go.

What did E A send me now?

Is that my signature on the side in my name?

So, one motivation bet between, between the, uh, the, the Gen E A sports project is that so many young sports fans have less of a, uh, a fandom for actual teams, but more so fall in love with individual athletes and players.

So what’s it like for you knowing that there are young football fans out there that watch Colorado games and have Colorado Gear on their wish lists because they’re Travis Hunter fans first.

I mean, it means a lot.

I have a lot of little sisters and little brothers and cousins.

So, I mean, it means a lot to me.

I go out there and work every day for, for them to understand that you can go as far as you wanna go.

You just gotta put the work here.
