CLEMSON — Clemson football defensive back Tyler Venables was ejected for targeting in the third quarter of Saturday’s game against App State.
It occurred on the Mountaineers‘ opening drive of the second half as they drove into Clemson’s territory. Venables will miss the remainder of Saturday’s game and the first half of Clemson’s game against NC State on Sept. 21.

Venables’ ejection came on an ill-advised hit on App State wide receiver Christan Horn. Mountaineers quarterback Joey Aguilar threw the ball in the left end zone to Horn with cornerback Ashton Hampton in coverage.
Hampton played the receiver well, but as Horn fell to the ground, Venables came over and struck the defenseless receiver in the head.

Clemson received a 15-yard penalty for targeting, and App State earned an automatic first down.
Venables was ejected from the game in the third quarter. Since it happened in the second half, he will miss the rest of Saturday’s game against App State and the first half of Clemson’s game against NC State on Sept. 21.
The Tigers are on a bye next week then will face the Wolfpack in their first ACC game of the year.
