The SEC’s two longest-tenured active head football coaches will be on opposite sidelines Saturday night at Kroger Field.
Kirby Smart, in his ninth season, brings his No. 1 Georgia football team to Lexington for its SEC opener.
Mark Stoops, in season No. 12, is 74-66 with the Wildcats including 1-1 this season after a 31-6 home loss to South Carolina last week.
“I have immense respect for Mark,” Smart said. “He and I have grown to be really good friends. He’s one of the best in the business. He’s done a tremendous job at Kentucky over the time he’s been there. His teams are always very disciplined, very physical.
Stoops wants to see his team more disciplined after last week. He used the word “embarrassing” to describe the 11 penalties for 63 yards.
“We must improve as you know, the schedule only gets harder with playing Kirby’s team, playing Georgia, the number one team in the nation,” Stoops said. “I guess you could flip a coin between them Texas. They both look like they’re awfully impressive.”
