The No. 1-ranked Georgia Bulldogs open the season on Saturday, Aug. 31. The Bulldogs play against the fourteenth ranked Clemson Tigers in Atlanta, Georgia, at Mercedes-Benz Stadium. The game will kick off the college football slate for the day at Noon ET and will be televised on ABC.
Georgia is coming off of a 13-1 season where they lost in the SEC championship after an undefeated regular season. Clemson is coming off a disappointing 9-4 campaign that saw them rebound from a poor start to the season with five straight wins.
The game has understandably captured the national media spotlight leading in and will be significant for both programs. Georgia aims to continue their streak of regular season wins going back to the 2020 season, while Clemson is seeking to return to the ranks of the top programs in the nation with a statement victory over what many consider the SEC’s premier program.
Here are some of the top media opinions and predictions that have been shared ahead of this high-profile matchup.
“More like normal football” than 2021’s matchup
Jake Rowe of On3 thinks that this edition of Georgia-Clemson will feature much more scoring.
Don’t sleep on Dabo Swinney
Desmond Howard of ESPN thinks that Clemson deserves respect heading into the season opener against Georgia.
“Good luck, Clemson”
Mitchell Northam of For The Win thinks that Georgia should win comfortably over Clemson.
“To set the stage, Georgia is the preseason favorite ranked No. 1 in the Associated Press preseason Top 25 Poll, and the Bulldogs open the season with No. 14 Clemson in Atlanta at the spaceship-like Mercedes-Benz Stadium. But the Dawgs are a double-digit favorite, and there’s little reason to believe that this game is going to be close or good.“
“Remember, the Tigers were the only non-service academy team in FBS this offseason to not add a player via the transfer portal (and the only reason Army, Navy and Air Force joined Clemson in this are because they aren’t allowed to accept transfers). While Dabo Swinney was busy changing the format of his radio show and not doing a whole lot to improve a roster that went 9-4 last year, Kirby Smart added running back Trevor Etienne from Florida, tight end Benjamin Yurosek from Stanford, safety Jake Pope from Alabama, and three wide receivers from Power 4 programs. So, yeah, good luck, Clemson.“
