A record 6,61,295 cusecs of water was released from Kosi Barrage Virpur on Sunday due to heavy rains in Nepal. About the same amount of water has been released in the Gandak barrage.

Due to this, rivers like Kosi, Gandak Bagmati, Budhi Gandak, Kamala Balan and Mahananda and Ganga have flowed in Bihar. The water level of these rivers has increased significantly. These rivers are flowing above the danger mark. The record release of water from Kosi Barrage Virpur has affected more than 16.28 lakh people in 13 districts, who are already battling floods due to heavy rains. In 1968, 7.88 lakh cusecs of water was released from Kosi Barrage Virpur. At that time too there was devastation in many districts of Bihar.

The waters of these rivers (Kosi, Gandak and Ganga) have entered the low-lying areas of West and East Champaran, Gopalganj, Araria, Supaul, Katihar, Purnia and many other districts. On Saturday morning, 780.3 mm of rain was recorded in various parts of Bihar. Rains are still continuing in some districts of Bihar.

The state government has declared alert for many districts of Bihar. On the other hand, the Meteorological Department has predicted heavy rains and warned of flood risk in some parts of the state. At present, around 13 districts along the banks of the Ganges, including Buxar, Bhojpur, Saran, Patna, Samastipur, Begusarai, Munger, Bhagalpur, are under flood-like conditions.

On the other hand, the number of people who lost their lives due to floods, rains and landslides in Nepal has increased to 148. 55 people are missing, while 101 people are injured due to floods, landslides and waterlogging. Life has come to a standstill in many parts. Many highways and roads are blocked, hundreds of houses and bridges are washed away. Hundreds of families have been displaced. Thousands of commuters are stuck at various places due to road block. At least 322 houses and 16 bridges were damaged. Around 3,626 people have been evacuated to safe places. Sources said that more than 20,000 security personnel have been deployed to protect people.
