India, the world’s largest democracy, recently presented its budget for the financial year 2024-25. This time, the budget was presented by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, thereby setting a new record. Sitharaman has become the first Finance Minister to present the budget for the seventh consecutive time, breaking the record of Morarji Desai. Apart from this, she has also become the second woman Defence Minister of India after Indira Gandhi.
That’s how my career began.
Hailing from an apolitical family in Chennai, Nirmala Sitharaman did her early education at the Sacred Heart Convent Anglo Indian Higher Secondary School, Villupuram. After this, she was also educated in Madras and Tiruchirappalli. She obtained a B.A. in Economics from Seethalakshmi Ramaswamy College, Tiruchirappalli. She came to Delhi for higher education and obtained an M.A. in Economics from Jawaharlal Nehru University in 1984. She subsequently enrolled for a PhD but due to family reasons had to leave it midway. Her husband Parakala Prabhakar moved to London to pursue a PhD from the London School of Economics and Sitharaman also moved with him to London.
When I had to work as a saleswoman
In London, she worked as a saleswoman in a home decor store and made good profits for the company during Christmas, for which the company gifted her a bottle of champagne. After this, she also worked with BBC World Service and auditing firm PricewaterhouseCoopers. Nirmala Sitharaman’s in-laws have been associated with the Congress party. Her mother-in-law Parakala Kalikamba has been a Congress MP from Andhra Pradesh, and her father-in-law Parakala Seshavataram has been a minister in Andhra Pradesh. Today Nirmala Sitharaman is the Finance Minister in the BJP government.
